With this evidence, Pindell makes plain the history of lynching and anti-Black violence in the United States. As a young girl, Pindell encountered a gruesome image of the burned body of a lynched man in Life magazine while she was standing in a friend’s living room, simultaneously aware of the smell of cooking meat coming from the kitchen. This experience left a lasting impression on the artist who later proposed showing this photograph and others in a performance at A.I.R. Gallery in the 1970s to bring attention to the legacy of lynching. While that performance did not come to fruition, Pindell’s success with her first film, Free, White and 21 (1980), led her to consider the video format for what would eventually become Rope/Fire/Water. When The Shed asked Pindell what unrealized project the organization could give her the resources to create for this exhibition, she returned to her 50-year-old plan for this work. In this new film, Pindell intersperses historical photographs with data sets and black screens, all punctuated by the ticking of a metronome and set to her narration. The film is a stark presentation of trauma’s impact over centuries of violence and cruelty inflicted on Black bodies since the transatlantic slave trade began. Galvanized by the tragic murder of #GeorgeFloyd in the summer of 2020, Pindell added a coda to the film in which she memorializes those who have died due to police brutality in recent years.
