The Bare Necessities 🐻 This German silver-gilt drinking cup modelled as a bear was made by Hans Auf der Burg in Nuremberg around the late 16th / early 17th century. Various animals and birds, such as leopards and owls, were used as inspiration for drinking cups made in precious metal - these objects became highly prized, and undoubtedly were witnesses to numerous occasions of merriment. It will be offered in the eleventh edition of our annual Treasures sale in London on 10 December.
