Five years before his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, Martin Luther King Jr. almost died. ⁣

What happened on Sept. 20, 1958, in a Harlem department store is briefly recounted in history books and old newspaper clippings that dutifully tell the who, what, when and where of a tragedy averted. But lesser known, because it was not in the nature of the men involved to broadcast it, are the snap decisions of a young police officer and his partner, dropped into a scene of bedlam and confusion, that would change the course of American history. ⁣

King had been signing copies of his book “Stride Toward Freedom” — a book about the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott — at Blumstein’s department store, when a young woman approached and stabbed him in the chest with a letter opener. Officer Al Howard, 31 years old and on the job 3 years, responded to the radio call and took charge at the scene, clearing the gathered crowds and evacuating King to Harlem Hospital, where doctors were able to remove the blade.⁣

King later wrote a letter to thank the police. “I have long been aware of the meaning of the phrase ‘New York’s finest’ when applied to members of the N.Y. Police Department,” he wrote. “From the moment of my unfortunate accident, I have concurred, wholeheartedly, in that appellation. There are none finer.”⁣
