We can have a longer conversation about it soon, but my overall thoughts surround an approach where we reuse and/or seek sustainable as opposed to creating new leather free products that are - let’s say- vegan, but are made from harmful plastics and environmental pollutants. I spent many years supporting vegan and leather free apparel when I was younger without questioning how they were necessarily made, but as I learn more about how a lot of those products are made I am finding that I am less drawn to labels and more drawn to process. Even if something is vegan, it is not necessarily sustainable which ultimately leads to the same place. You see, if we kill our planet, there won’t be room for healthy thriving animals anyway, so its all connected. As I lean deeper into reusing materials and less into categories or labels, I find myself very very excited about using mycelium as a form of “leather” because it is plant-based, sustainable, and actually supports regeneration. Mycelium, the underground network that breathes life into our soil, our bodies, and our planet is the future, and it may or may not have inspired my entire design process for our new Bayou Collection I’ve been working on since March as well.
