I have been able to see the world, have a positive impact on my community, gained friends and family...but there are many who don’t want trans athletes to be a part of the athletic world. Despite all the misinformation, trans athletes want the same as every athlete: a chance to participate and grow with the sport they love. We can’t fight this battle alone and fortunately we don’t have to. @AthleteAlly works to dismantle the structures of oppression that isolate, exclude and endanger LGBTQI+ people in sport, especially trans and nonbinary youth. In the past year, 19 states in the US have introduced horrific legislation targeting trans youth and their ability to play sports simply because of who they are. Because of COVID-19, LGBTQI+ youth are at increased risk of depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. Sports are proven to reduce depression for LGBTQI+ youth.
