Uniting three industry insiders, we delve into a deep discussion about what it means to be North African today. Continually mislabelled as “Arab”, “Middle Eastern” or simply “Muslim”, the visual identity and perception of North Africans—both in the region and across the diaspora—is rich, complex and often deeply misunderstood. With rampant islamophobia spreading throughout the West, affecting young North Africans the world over, we unravel the power of photography in subverting formerly harmful cliches and reappropriating orientalist tropes, through the prism of race, religion, class, gender and sexuality.
