I knew right after this self portrait that I would have to spend the next few hours hiking alone through grizzly bear territory, scrambling down cliffs with sketchy 2,000 ft (600m) drops on either side. Each time I rounded a turn the bushes looked like bears and every noise grabbed my attention making me question what I was hearing.
⠀
Not only was this pushing the limits of my comfort zone but it was also one of the most beautiful night scenes I have ever seen and certainly one of the most difficult for me to photograph!

Photo Details/Settings-
With no light pollution, the valley was so dark that I actually had to take an exposure that was over a minute and a half to capture the detail down there. This was one of the few times I've had to bracket exposures in a night scene but it’s what was necessary to capture everything the way my eyes saw it.
⠀
Landscape- f/2, ISO 8000, 95 second exposure.
Universe above- f/2, ISO 6400, 20 second exposure.
⠀
I debated even posting this picture for a long time. It's noisy and I’m not super sharp in the photo (try holding still for 95 seconds in the dark with some wind blowing haha). I never want to encourage people to do things that aren’t safe, but it also represents a lot of things that I love. Adventures like this are a big part of what excites me, I learn a lot about myself and my craft, and ultimately experiences like this are what helped get me to where I am today!
