Such a personal approach to his art came to define Guibert’s fearless oeuvre, which left an indelible mark on French culture for its sensitive and revealing documentation of his too-short life, bravely capturing his personal experience of living with Aids – an illness he lost his live to aged 36. Guibert’s friends and lovers would often feature in his images and essays, and in 1981, Guibert described the act of image-making as “also an act of love”.
