The French press labeled the deconstructionist trend of the early 1990s, “La Mode Destroy.” While it’s true that this pared-back and often patchwork approach to design revealed the “skeletons” of garments, the end goal was not to erase fashion but to take it apart and put it back together in new ways. Martin Margiela, for example, was an early proponent of upcycling.
