Shaking the assumptions of western Modernism, Wifredo Lam sought to fuse the enduring Afro-Cuban spirit with Surrealism and Cubism in his work. Closely connected to the European avant-garde movements, Lam was inspired by some of the most fabled artists of his day, including #PabloPicasso, who took the young artist under his wing while living in Paris during the thirties, as well as #FridaKahlo and #DiegoRivera, with whom Lam stayed with while in Mexico.
