During the Second Sino-Japanese War (between China and Japan), film director Yasujiro Ozu was sent to China to fight. He saw and experienced the worst of the war. According to his diary, he made plans to make war films once he got back to Japan. But in the end he never did. Through the gesture of erasure, contemporary artist Meiro Koizumi attempts to bring this repressed dimension of Ozu’s diaries back to the surface.

On 3 and 4 December our conference 'From Alexandria to Tokyo: Art, Colonialism and Entangled Histories' will explore the complex artistic creations and legacies of non-European colonialisms from North Africa to East Asia. Koizumi’s work will be discussed among many other artistic perspectives on non-European colonialism and experiences of power. Book your free ticket via the link in our bio.
