Cheek has been active in opposing the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, a controversial extraction project that President Trump reintroduced in 2017 and that President-elect Biden has promised to shut down. The proposed pipeline would cross through the Missouri River just south of the reservation: “This is our medicine,” she said, referring to the plants and herbs used by Native American communities for medicinal and ceremonial purposes—and which she fears could be contaminated by a pipeline spill.
