Shaw presented Eveyln as the Queen of Hearts from the children's nursery rhyme.⠀

She is shown stepping out from a pack of playing cards, moving forward as if to break through the picture plane. Her sister, the artist Isabel Codrington, holds a plate of jam tarts behind her.⠀

The Queen's head-dress and the way she clutches the folds of her dress are a direct reference to the Arnolfini bride.⠀

The picture clearly shows the inspiration of the Pre-Raphaelites but marked the point at which according to Byam Shaw's friend Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale, the artist 'sprang suddenly out in his extraordinarily brilliant and original style'.⠀
