#GagosianOnline: The second cycle of Gagosian Online, available until December 3 at 12pm EST, presents five artworks that interrogate political and social institutions as symbolic representations of identity, power, and culture.

Despite the differences in their mediums and content, Tom Wesselmann’s still-life sculpture and Richard Artschwager’s painting of the US Capitol Building are both emblematic of American culture, which has come to be defined by both its political systems—represented in the American Neoclassical-style civic architecture in Artschwager’s composition—and mass consumerism, suggested by the array of mid-1960s commercial objects in Wesselmann’s domestic interior scene.

In her ongoing series "Black Square" (2006–), Taryn Simon photographs objects, people, and documents against a black field of the same dimensions as Kazimir Malevich’s Suprematist painting of 1915. Simon’s contemporary icons, including this portrait of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr., whom she photographed in 2009, are charged with the uncertainties and paradoxes of our futures.

Meanwhile, both Andreas Gursky and Jeff Koons borrow art historical depictions of biblical scenes and reinterpret them in a contemporary idiom to convey the endurance of such narrative themes over time. Follow the link in our bio for more information or to make an inquiry.
