This week we lost a great man, Rafer Johnson, A great Father, Humanitarian, and Olympic Champion. My main motivation for training for the decathlon so hard was that I wanted to stand on the same stage as the great champions of the past. Rafer was my hero because of the way he conducted his life and I wanted to emulate that. Here is a quote from his book, when talking about the 99 stairs he had to climb up to light the Olympic flame in Los Angeles, “I was, in a sense, an Olympian again, preparing to will my body to do something exceptional. Was I concerned about making it to the top of the stairs? Yes. Was I thinking about whether I might trip or fall? Yes. Did I have any doubt that I would come through? No.” A great lesson for all of us. God speed, Rafer, you will be missed by so many.
