December 4 marks a special anniversary.
70 years ago today, two Americans—one black, one white—went to the ends of the earth together. When he was shot down, Ensign Jesse Brown was defending the Marines who were trapped and outnumbered in freezing temperatures on the ground at the Chosin Reservoir. After the crash, Jesse was trapped in his plane, behind enemy lines, and the plane was catching fire. It looked like he’d die alone—until Lieutenant Tom Hudner crashed alongside him. It was an intentional crash-landing. In spite of his efforts, Tom’s rescue mission would fall short. But on a faraway mountainside in North Korea, these men showed us the best that Americans can be.
In 2016, I read the book “Devotion.” It detailed the story of this unlikely friendship in a time of racial division. Now, at the top of 2021, we will finally begin shooting the film that shows that the bond of humanity is greater than our fears. We can only be human together.
