If I wasn’t a pro on @dancingonice this year and I lived in a tier 3 area, I wouldn’t be allowed to skate*. Currently, ice rinks in tier 3 areas can only open for elite athletes** (I’m not an elite athlete anymore), people with a disability, and supervised under-18 training.

I find it incredibly frustrating that figure skaters who are 18 years old or older cannot skate on patch ice (training ice for experienced skaters who have their own skates) in tier 3 areas when they can go to the gym or go swimming.

Before anyone says that it’s about the cold... You’re allowed to visit an indoor snow centre and ski/snowboard recreationally at any age. Snow centres are a lot colder than ice rinks.

Ice rinks are sports facilities (not ‘entertainment venues and visitor attractions‘) and people of all ages who practice figure skating, ice hockey, speed skating, and curling should be allowed to practice the sport that they love. It’s incredibly important to their physical and mental health. These sports can be practiced in a safe, Covid-secure way.

❤️ Please, for the physical and mental health of ice skaters in England, sign the petition (link in bio) to allow ice rinks to remain open in tier 3 areas so that skaters of all ages can skate ❤️

*I would be allowed to coach under-18s on patch ice but I wouldn’t be able to go into the rink and skate for my own training purposes. The guidelines released by the British government also say that ‘professional dancers and choreographers’ are allowed but there is no further information about this in the tier 3 guidelines that @britishiceskating have released so it’s not clear who exactly this includes. I’m a pair skater, not a dancer, and I don’t work as a professional choreographer outside of Dancing On Ice so I don’t think that this exclusion would apply to me.

**According to the British government an ‘elite athlete’ is a person who is:
• an individual who derives a living from competing in a sport
• a senior representative nominated by a relevant sporting body
• a member of the senior training squad for a relevant sporting body, or
• aged 16 or above and on an elite development pathway.
