It’s never changed despite the many changes it’s made or… has sometimes been forced to make. There have been a lot of highs and lows because starting any business, and maintaining it, is harder than we ever imagined. The hours are terrible, the pay even worse and any appreciation is often times drowned out by the cacophony of criticism and noise that comes hard and swift for the jugular. Our only way of countering it has been to just keep going, to ignore the losses and focus on the future, to try our best to always do the right thing even when our hands are tied and it feels impossible to do anything at all. The intense hate, criticism and scathing negativity I see on social media every day in our community towards women, minorities, lefts, rights, ups, downs, our employees, myself and anyone with any slight difference in their style, appearance, level of skating, trick selection or beliefs outside of the current acceptable “norm” made popular by the mob, has made this 13th year a somewhat bittersweet one as I barely recognize “skateboarding” anymore. This new definition of “community” often times puts into question the worthwhileness of our original goal and whether or not to keep going as the world we are all living in right now is a tough one where only the few at the top dominate everyone from the bottom up to the people just beneath them. For us, The Berrics was created to try and escape a fate, so many around us have fallen victim to in 2020. But even we are not safe. However, that inextricable love for skateboarding is why we have never stopped pushing. Even when the establishment fought us for showing you things could be done differently, we kept going. From some of the greatest people to ride a skateboard to the ones who take photos of it, film it, write about or are just fans of it, we have a profound kinship with you and are so thankful to have crossed your paths in this life. I cannot promise you we’ll always be here, but as long as we are, we’re gonna do our best by everyone we can. Thank you so much. - sb」12月8日 15時44分 - berrics
