Everything comes from somewhere. This was the beginning of one of the hardest assignments I've done for @ナショナルジオグラフィック: the source to sand megatransect of the Cuito Catchment from the Angolan Highlands all the way into Botswana. We tend to think of places as singular...like the Okavango Delta. But its important to remember that all places are tied to a myriad of others in a deeply interconnected web. What happens upstream reverberates downstream. This is true wherever we go. We drove through heavily land- mined bush for hours on end before we emerged here, under a big pale sky, and camped in the tall grass on the banks of an unassuming lake. Laying thousands of Kilometers north of the Delta, the pond is the headwaters of the Cuito, and the source of 70% of the Delta's annual water. The next months were a deep dive into the ecological machinations that tied that humble little lake to the beating heart of Southern Africa, and an attempt to gather enough information to align three governments in action for conservation.
