New York based painter Aliza Nisenbaum (b.1977, Mexico) has dedicated her 2020 to painting the portraits of key workers! 💙 Inspired by the dedication of NHS staff in Liverpool, the artist has created a series of zoom-based portraits that represent an incredible community of individuals who have been working tirelessly throughout the pandemic.
Nisenbaum spent hours talking with and painting her sitters over zoom, and the resulting portraits are luminously colourful and nuanced, reflecting the close connections that were formed. Sitters include a professor of Outbreak Medicine, a respiratory doctor who became a father during the first wave, and a student nurse who comes from a family of nurses who all chose to return to frontline work.
Two of the large-scale group portraits and eleven individual portraits will go on display in Nisenbaum's solo exhibition, opening next week at @TateLiverpool, and it's free to see. The exhibition captures the stories of frontline NHS workers and highlights the impact that Covid-19 has had on their jobs and home lives.
