I recognize the privilege of climbing in this community, as well as the risks, which is why @james_lucas and I self-isolated for the first two weeks (before Thanksgiving) and are renting a house into 2021. The current stay-at-home order (effective December 5th) shuts down campgrounds and many indoor services but encourages local, outdoor recreation with immediate household members. . Earlier last week, a pair of masked climbers approached our group at the Druids. They asked if we minded if they climbed with us, and we said - yes, we do mind 😐 Not rudely, but not warmly either. The climbers stood there for a bit, asked us for suggestions of where else to go, and eventually walked off. It was a slightly awkward but overall respectful and productive encounter. . I’m writing this to acknowledge our current location, as well as offer a sincere ⭐️thank you⭐️ to those climbers. Social etiquette is difficult to navigate and the climbing community is just as affected by poor communication as any other group environment. Conflict is inevitable 💥 Bad behavior is worth calling out, but I hope that also highlighting good behavior encourages others to follow in similar fashion. . Many climbers are socially distancing, wearing masks, and asking permission to climb. It’s pretty rad. Big thanks to those who, for the most part, are setting positive examples and managing these awkward moments with grace 🙏🏻 I’m particularly grateful to @bishopclimbers and @bishopclimbingrangers for the daily work you do. .
