The premise was simple enough: A fallen angel, in the form of model #AmberValletta, descends upon New York in the most ethereal looks of the season. But Peter Lindbergh’s epic 1993 story for BAZAAR transcended fashion. The shoot was inspired in part by the 1987 Wim Wenders film, ‘Wings of Desire,’ about an angel who is sent to observe the earthly world and winds up choosing humanity over immortality. The imagery took on added meaning at a pivotal moment in another pandemic, the AIDS crisis, which by the end of 1993 had claimed more than 270,000 lives in the U.S. alone; that year, Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer Prize–winning play, ‘Angels in America,’ a stark exploration of the pain, rage, and ravages of the disease, opened on Broadway and helped punctuate a cultural reckoning. Lindbergh’s story wasn’t mournful, though.
