#DidYouKnow that Room 1 – the Enlightenment Gallery – is the oldest space in the Museum?

It was the first wing to be built, with construction starting in 1823. It housed King George III’s library of more than 65,000 books that had been given to the nation by his son, George IV.

Skip forward nearly 200 years, and when the British Library opened in 1997, the books were transferred to the new building at St Pancras in London. Careful restoration of Room 1 could then begin.

The work was completed in time to celebrate the Museum's 250th anniversary, and the newly renovated Enlightenment Gallery reopened #OnThisDay in 2003.
