#WorkoftheWeek: In “Totem” (pictured), artist @SarahCrowner plays with symmetry, repetition, and distortion, as the same basic petal shape appears stretched or compressed at each of the work’s three levels. Meticulous black stitches interrupt the passages from blue to unpainted canvas, revealing the mechanics of the artist’s process.

As with many of Crowner’s works, the three iterations of the petal-shaped form have a specific art historical origin. The painting’s blue and beige composition magnifies the decorative pattern on a 1909 pillowcase designed by Josef Hoffmann, an Austrian architect, teacher, designer, and founding member of the Vienna Secession, whose minimalist aesthetic principles and inventive applied designs presaged early modernism and influenced the artists of the Bauhaus.
