Ueda Castle’s Sanada Shrine
(Ueda City)

Ueda Castle is known for successfully defending itself against two assaults during Japan’s Warring States Period and is often called an impregnable fortress. 

Many people visit Ueda Castle hoping that some of the castle’s resilience will rub off on them, namely students preparing for their exams.

They write their wishes on wooden plaques, called ema, and hang them around the temple. Sometimes the hanging plaques form a veritable tunnel of wishes.
