I have recently read the news of the drilling that has begun in our beautiful Bahamian waters. To say I am disappointed and alarmed does not even begin to express my feelings adequately. During the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, when the world was halted to a standstill and there was so much uncertainty, fear, anxiety, struggle, and hardships across the globe I, and I’m sure along with countless others, tried to look at this pause as a chance for our broken planet to breathe a little easier and try and heal the damage and destruction we have caused. I personally would look at photos daily of before and after photos of the planet during the time of the pandemic. I looked at charts showing the impressive decrease in pollution and read about the countless alternatives to fossil fuels we could us to help the planet with climate change. On January 7th 2020 I gave birth to my second daughter, a difficult year to bring a child into the world. I was able to find comfort in hoping the world was using these lockdowns as a chance to truly look at ourselves in the mirror and see how we can make a difference. I have always been a proud Bahamian, I am proud to live here, I am proud to raise my daughters here. Since the beaches have been re-opened, I now take my children on walks on them almost every-day. We always encounter something different, turtles, nurse sharks, rays, and I promised my eldest that one day she would see dolphins and maybe even a whale. After reading the news today I feel like I am going to be break that promise. Today I feel like I am lying to her. Our country has chosen fossil fuels over renewables and are therefore willing to risk so much, everything actually. A hypocritical decision when so much of the world is trying the hardest to help end climate-change. Instead of being an example to our fellow islands, we have chosen to sell out because of greed. The agreement to this drilling is saying that you don’t care about our waters. That we don’t care about what makes this country unique and special. *Continued in comments. @bahamasnationaltrust」12月23日 3時55分 - pumpkintheraccoon
