But every single year, as far as I can remember, it was mandatory to spend the whole day with him. Lunch was traditionally at La Coupole, then the ownership changed and we had to move to another restaurant... After lunch, we shopped. For some reason his Christmas shopping could only be done on that day, with his kids, when the shops were packed. It was rather stressful, but again, mandatory. He had his little habits, including getting my mother a natural sponge from Old England, which she said she didn’t want, every year, but still got, every year (fortunately, the sponge was always accompanied by a few other very generous gifts). In the evening, the family would get together for dinner. Attendees varied as years went by, different wives, boyfriends, new children & grandchildren... But his children always had to be there, all together, in Paris, with him. Mandatory. This year, @cletan and I will be doing our best to honour the Le-Tan tradition over here in New York...
