The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore was designated in 1970, and we marked the 50th anniversary by kayaking and hiking through them. The islands are Ojibwe Native land and at the heart of the Anishinaabe creation story. For centuries they were cut, mined, farmed, and commercially fished by European settlers. The national park was established to protect, preserve, and share these beautiful and naturally wild islands.
