I grew up like a normal kid and lost the bulk of my vision in my twenties. I now have ‘light perception’ – I can tell that it’s light out. I had a cane and then got my first guide dog when I was 29. The cane is an obstacle finder, whereas a dog is an obstacle avoider. A dog can seamlessly navigate around things like trash cans. She’ll stop and show me there’s a change in elevation, like stairs. She’ll do a ‘close’ if we’re on public transportation or in an auditorium and go between my legs. We’re very in tune and can navigate anything from NYC to a dirt path. Last year we went to the Grand Canyon and ran on a beach. She’s also the best companion ever. She’s silly when she can be and serious when she needs to be. I can’t even explain how amazing it is to walk with a dog and get where you need to be. She used to guide me through the subway and find an empty seat and slide right between my legs. She’s picked up suburban living, no problem.” Guiding Eyes for the Blind is a top-rated nonprofit that raises, trains and matches guide dogs completely free of charge with the people who need them most.
