Magnum photographer Thomas Dworzak (@thomasdworzak) documented Ethiopian refugees fleeing the conflict in the Tigray region after the government's military offensive against what is perceived as separatism by the Tigray regional government and its military branch Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

In November 2020, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister ordered military action against the TPLF following an alleged attack on a major Ethiopian Army base. The military conflict escalated after the TPLF held regional elections despite the constitutional postponement of the national elections due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dworzak visited Al Hashaba and Um Rakuba camps, where refugees settle when crossing into Sudan, and where Médecins Sans Frontières (@doctorswithoutborders) runs the water supplies and has an emergency clinic in the camp.

By 12th December 2020, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that the number of refugees who have arrived in Sudan reached 50,000 – 45% of whom are children - with more than 1,500 arrivals on average per day.
