I was 14 and had fallen in love with goaltending after watching a Maple Leaf’s game with my brother. It was a singularly insane idea, but I was determined. By 17, I was playing midget AA. I am SO grateful that there were coaches and teachers along the way who believed in my wacky dream and gave me a shot to play for their teams, spent hours training me, picked me up for practices, paid for my summer camps. I’m so grateful that there were other young women who encouraged me and vouched for me, some of whom have remained lifelong friends. Hockey gave me confidence. It gave me a team of young women behind me, a place I truly belonged. It gave me surrogate fathers after I had lost mine. It taught me I was powerful and able to achieve anything I set my mind to.
