In early spring, as the ice in our northern hemisphere begins to melt, the wood frog awakens from its cryogenic slumber. Studies show this remarkable frog can be frozen for an average of 193 days in temperatures as low as 0 degrees Fahrenheit. When temperatures rise, the wood frog’s frozen blood will thaw, eventually restarting its heart in under 12 hours.
