Statistically, white people like to venerate civil rights leaders when they are dead. We do not generally stand with them while they are living and demanding change to the status quo. (Only 30% of white people approved of MLK Jr. when he was alive and demanding change. But we like to imagine we’d have been marching with him then.) If we want to push forward and honor the Reverend’s sacred legacy of “the urgency of now” let’s stand with and for our civil rights leaders of today.
