The 30-year-old nursing school student is pregnant with their child, due on March 15, which would have been the couple's sixth wedding anniversary. In December and January I documented six families that lost relatives to the COVID-19 pandemic. Writer Katie Sanders explores what it means to say goodbye from a distance, whether that is a hazmat suit, via Zoom, or through text message. For this project I was also documenting at a distance, creating virtual portraits from my studio in Brooklyn. Since it was too risky to travel and take these portraits in person, we decided to create virtual portraits from my Brooklyn studio. This approach seemed fitting because the story focuses on distance, separation, and communication through devices, so I created a still-life setup with my iPad surrounded by white flowers, to commemorate those lost.
