Small-scale altarpieces comprising carved scenes on the interior and painted wings were produced in the Netherlands during the late Gothic period for individual worship. However, because of their mobility and mostly private ownership, few have survived through history. This complete ‘house altar’ with the Lamentation as the central motif, which was made in Brussels in the late 15th century, is an extremely rare and fine example of its kind.
