As I work on selects for my book of my bird photography, I am enjoying reliving many expeditions chasing birds around the world, and recalling the lengths I’ve often gone to to capture unique images. Here on these mud flats, the ibises were spread wide and not coming near me, and I need a way to approach them without disturbing them. So I devised a blind made of a platform on a truck inner tube. I could push it across the mudflats slowly and the birds just seemed to think I was a slowly moving bush and ignored me. But yes, I was up to my knees in mud for hours. But the plan worked. I got the shots, and my blind floated so that when the tide came in I got picked up by my assistants in a boat.
