"One of the reasons I painted was to catch life as it goes by, right hot off the griddle." — Alice Neel
Born January 28, 1900, figurative painter and longtime New Yorker #AliceNeel was known for her powerful, psychologically rich "pictures of people" (the phrase she often used to describe her work), including family, friends, lovers, poets, artists, activists, and more—such as this 1936 painting from the #MetCollection.
Known today only by her first name, Elenka—whose strong, penetrating gaze Neel captured with a bold composition and blocks of flat color—was presumably one of the bohemians Neel knew while living in Greenwich Village in the 1930s.
See this work alongside 100 paintings, watercolors, and drawings in our upcoming exhibition “Alice Neel: People Come First,” on view March 22 – August 1, 2021. Learn more at the link in bio.
