“I grew up in a community that’s Otomi-Toltec, which is an indigenous community in Mexico. That meant that I grew up with a philosophy for reciprocity, a philosophy of “we take care of Mother Earth because Mother Earth takes care of us.” As I grew older, I realized that that relationship was being broken all around me. People were actually polluting and contaminating, and exploiting without thinking. A turning point was when my hometown flooded. That’s the first time that I realized that the climate crisis was not happening in 2050, or 2100 — that it was manifesting itself. And that the communities that were most affected by it, had the least resources to deal with it.”

@xiyebeara on her journey to becoming an environmental activist and leading voice for indigenous and immigrant visibility, while working to make the climate movement more diverse and inclusive.
