In fact, I only had to climb a cliff to get this bird’s-eye view of a horseman riding in the middle of winter on Lake Baikal in Siberia. And even though the ice is cracked, it is over a meter thick, and even trucks drive across the lake in this season. There is much water under the spiked hooves of that horse—Lake Baikal is the world’s largest freshwater lake by volume, containing over 20 percent of the world’s liquid fresh surface water and up to a mind-boggling 1,642 meters (5,387 feet) deep.
