It refers to the day which divides the end of winter and the beginning of spring from the following day. In Japan, people participate in traditional events on this day from a long time ago. They throw dried beans cheerily, drive away evil spirits and bring in fortune and spring. People place the decoration called "Hiiragiiwashi (sardine and holly charm)" next to the front door on the Setsubun Festival day. Since ancient times, people likened diseases and disasters tend to go around during change of seasons to demons, and it is the ritual to ward off evil spirits. It has been said that sharp pickles of holly leaves pierce ogre's eyes, and the baked bad smell and smoke of sardine chases ogre away, so people combine them with soybeans and place it at the entrance as a charn against evil influence and misfortune.
