Zao Wou-Ki was born on this day, February 1, 1920, in Beijing.

Throughout his career, Zao Wou-Ki merged Eastern and Western aesthetic traditions in his paintings, retaining technical elements of Chinese painting styles while embracing European Modernism. A 2019 exhibition of the artist's work at Gagosian paid homage to his close, enduring friendship with the Chinese-American architect I. M. Pei.
