It was that belief that inspired us to launch @peoplessupper in January 2017. We wanted to help people break free of their bubbles & to understand the stories beneath whatever stereotypes they held of groups that weren't their own: immigrants or Muslim Americans, liberals or conservatives.

The 4 years since have been a study in everything I didn't understand at the time: the limits of social contact theory, & what can & can't be done over dinner; that it is no mere "matter of attitudes" — that racist policies produce racial disparities which reinforce racist attitudes, & that we cannot settle for empty calls for unity, or feel-good moments of bridge-building w/o addressing the inequities that divide us in the first place; that if we want real progress, we have to first build trust & then attend to all the banal things that get in the way — crossed communication wires, a lack of follow-through, infighting & factions & finger-pointing, & harried leadership, as we go from one fire to the next.
