ナショナルジオグラフィックさんのインスタグラム写真 - (ナショナルジオグラフィックInstagram)「Photos by Richard Barnes / In 2015 I photographed a story for National Geographic on the history, production, and environmental consequences associated with the harvesting of rubber across countries and continents. The history of rubber production begins 150 years ago in the jungles of Brazil. Through a series of events related to rubber tree leaf blight and an early example of industrial espionage, rubber production by the late 1800s was almost exclusively controlled by the British. Rubber tree plantations are today found throughout former British colonies, including Malaysia and Myanmar, but also Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and especially China. Today the Chinese control the trade and the commodification of natural rubber. Thousands of acres of jungle straddling borders across Southeast Asia have been burned and converted to rubber tree plantations. On one hand, rubber has brought riches to what were once subsistence farmers, but the environmental cost for indigenous plant life and animals is incalculable and ongoing.
