I had some major objectives, but my grand prize was that I wanted to climb my first 5.13c. I even had a specific route in mind. Things changed when early in the year the world was shaken by a global pandemic. I felt the need to take action. I gave up my freelance remote gigs to re-enter the journalism industry that I had left a few years prior. I believe that knowledge and information are powerful. I also believe the job of a good journalist is to spread accurate and useful information. It would be a lie to say I wasn’t anxious about how my climbing would suffer. Going from climbing almost full-time to taking up a more than full-time job was intimidating. But because I still wanted to climb hard, I found a way to do it. So despite a crucial election year, a global pandemic, and becoming a full-time reporter through it all, I also stayed dedicated to climbing. I trained on my hangboard, found local projects, and successfully doubled the number of 5.13a I had climbed. I was given the opportunity to teach my first clinic for the American Alpine Club, and also found the time to help establish a first ascent multi-pitch project that I had been working on with my partner for 2 years. Because I climbed mostly local this year, I never got the chance to send the 5.13c route in 2020. But I’m proud of my other accomplishments in 2020...
