This is Amelia Boynton Robinson. The famous photo of her beaten by a White officer during the “Bloody Sunday” march in Selma, Alabama, in 1965 helped galvanize the civil rights movement. It led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act and also revealed the toughness of Robinson, dubbed “the matriarch of the voting rights movement.” President Obama honored her half a century later when he clutched her hand as they crossed the Selma bridge in 2015 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. ⁠
