As the lead trial attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Constance Baker Motley was the first Black woman to argue a case before the Supreme Court. She wrote the legal brief for the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education case, which struck down racial segregation in public schools. She successfully represented Martin Luther King Jr., Freedom Riders, lunch-counter protesters and the Birmingham Children Marchers. She was also the first Black woman to serve in the New York state Senate and the first Black woman federal judge.
