"My biggest travel influence has always been the desire and need to see everything and go everywhere. Growing up in an island nation where the population was very small, I always had a fascination for the world beyond the sea. Seeing so many places and attractions in books and on TV, I was always captivated by the people and cultures that look like me or practice the same customs as me.

One of the most challenging parts of being a young, Black traveler is receiving the same level of service from businesses that non-POC (people of color) receive. One time while traveling, I was told, 'You wouldn’t be interested in eating here. The menu isn’t your fit.' In that moment, I knew what was happening, but I did not make a fuss about it. I simply went elsewhere.

Rather than having pre-conceived biases and notions about a particular group of people, we should be more interested to learn as much as we can about them. By learning about their backgrounds and challenges, we are better able to have more empathy and understanding. In a climate where division is being displayed, it’s now that we should want to know how we can help each other.

One of the ways I’ve seen people support others is by simply admitting when they don’t know something. When I come into discussions with people that say, 'I don’t know, nor will I ever know what it is like, but I want to better understand,' this is when we get the chance to educate and inform. If more people took this approach to not only learn about the injustices but also unlearn their biases, we’d have more understanding and less division." - Kenneth K. - Flight Attendant, #ATL

As we continue to celebrate the impact Black culture has had on our world, it's also a time to acknowledge how we can to truly live up to our shared values of opportunity, fairness and respect for all.
