They don’t overly romanticize or villainize anybody to serve a narrative or plot purpose, but honour them as moving, breathing, needing persons. We feel for each of them, even those we don’t agree with; find ourselves somehow understanding that there are no monsters or heroes, just people trying their best. We all believe we are trying to “do life right” - whether we achieve that aim or not. And as an actor I know that in each character I play, it is paramount that I recognize how blind she is to her own stumbling blocks, her own error, as we all are. When Benedict Cumberbatch plays Smaug, he is not judging Smaug. He believes in Smaug’s convictions. Good writers, producers and directors can do that for each character. And if they can do that in children’s entertainment, all the more astounding. My children and I were breathless at the climax of Wolfwalkers by my favourite animation house @cartoonsaloon. They tell pressing, traditional Irish myths with such conviction they are more relevant to me than many modern films. If you want a quality film to watch with your kids, or without, this weekend, I recommend this one. Beautiful artistry with classic pencil and paint animation, they don’t hold any stops for the mini-people watching.
