Posted @withregram • @bookreviewsbytara 🎉Happy Book Birthday to Vibrate Higher🎉When I learned Talib Kweli was writing his memoir I expected to get a deep look into the life of the man that gave us, 𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙨 𝙐𝙥 𝙀𝙮𝙚𝙨 𝙊𝙥𝙚𝙣 and 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙩, two of my all time favorite songs, I wanted to learn more about the man that is still in heavy rotation on my playlist. And although I did learn more about Talib the man, I learned even more about Talib the artist. In this book, Talib’s life story is the icing. But, it is the story of rap music that is the cake. Hence the title, Vibrate Higher: A͟ ͟R͟a͟p͟ ͟S͟t͟o͟r͟y😉.

𝐕𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 took me inside the culture of rap music. It told me how Talib established & solidified his place in hip-hop, and emerged as one of the most lyrically gifted MCs in the game. Reading this book is like listening to Talib’s music, it’s smooth in delivery, yet very relevant & extremely powerful in content!

Each chapter is filled with good stories. I loved reading about the beautiful relationship Talib shared with his late grandmother “Mama Obama”. 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦 😌.

Reading about the brotherhood between Talib and Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def touched my heart. It’s good to know their kinship is real, and has stood the test of time. Unlike a lot of other groups in the music industry.

As a long time Kweliclub member, I particularly enjoyed reading the story of Kweliclub & how it got started. (𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘰 @kweliclub & @fsgbooks 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘢𝘸𝘦𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘵 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘈𝘙𝘊).

For me, it is the final chapters of the book that packs the most powerful punch. In these chapters Talib details his role in combating systemic inequality & racism. He writes about the Black Lives Matter movement, and how Trump’s presidency, and police brutality has affected this country, as well as, his life.

Overall, this book satisfied the hip hop lover in me. 𝐕𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 should be in the library of hip-hop
