Angelina Jolie’s movie “In The Land Of Blood and Honey” about the Bosnian war can easily be seen as pro-imperialist propaganda because it completely failed to grasp the role of German and American imperialism in the breakup of Yugoslavia as well as the policies of that wretched organization called IMF (International Monetary Fun) the UN was also not innocent. If it wasn’t for these forces, their imperialist ambitions and their stoking of nationalist forces the breakup of Yugoslavia would not have occurred. The civil war would not have happened. It’s as if the director and writers ignored fifty percent of the truth either consciously or unconsciously. Either way art doesn’t like half measures, the movie wasn’t very convincing. Any serious artist needs to grasp the bigger pro capitalist forces at play in a historical event they are trying to dramatize otherwise they fall too easily into prejudice, one sidedness and shallowness. History is incredibly important and we need more movies and artists who desire to tackle historical events seriously. This is not an easy task. Often they will fail especially in a time when the truth is buried under layers and layers of lies and when the overall artistic level is low. However artists also need to have permission to fail. Quentin Tarantino’s movies are soaked in psychopathic violence often for no great artistic reason beyond cheap shock, American and International critics don’t campaign for their censorship, they praise and love them. Artists could and should be doing a much better job of telling the truth everywhere but they need to have freedom to do so. That freedom needs to be upheld at all costs. P.S.
